"Music to my ears!" - An oft heard phrase which depicts music as in the ear of the beholder. Up until the last decade much of White Power music was played by nothing more than garage bands who had not yet mastered their instruments let alone the concept of musical presentation. With the growing popularity of the internet, however, the White Power music industry began to turn a profit and it became more and more clear that there was money to be made and other residuals attached to making music the racist way.

With names like "Extreme Hatred" and "Brutal Attack" the bands have managed to carve out a little corner of the music market. Though not yet mainstream, they are knocking on the door. Utilizing the premise of Freedom of Speech and expression, the promoters of White Power music are attempting to catapult their brand of hate into neighborhood music stores. Given the current financial success that they are experiencing with internet sales, they may just be able to get there from here.

Clearly, the marketing of White Power Music is geared toward the youth. Bryant Calvert (Byron Cecchini) is one of the two men who runs Panzerfaust records. In a recent interview with Devin Burghart of Turn It Down, Calvert made the following statement:

"Panzerfaust always had good customer relations. We turn around and send orders out the next day. They've always given away tons of free goodies to kids, if there's ever a question with an order, we resend it, that kind of stuff. I like to go to the library and read books on marketing.

"Stickers and literature, we just jam as much stuff into a package as we can. And those kids, they know who in their school or their coworkers or family (would be interested), and they just spread the word for us.

"It is growing. Like I said, we've got thousands of customers in over 40 different countries. As far as what we do on a daily basis, we don't really get into that. But I will say that over the last couple years it's probably doubled."

As a recruiting tool, perhaps no other method is as profitable to the racists as is the music. Generally, they have found that holding a "concert" following a rally helps to get more members involved. Many are more apt to travel longer distances with the promise of a concert. Additionally, they are often able to coax a few of the local kids into checking them out with a couple of free tickets to the concert. Internet sales are largely to kids and young adults. Calvert has this to say about his email:

"I probably do over a hundred emails a day. And it's just nuts how many emails I get that are your average 14- or 15-year-old kid that came across us by doing an internet search, or because he saw a sticker or some friends of his told him about the label. And they go and they actually read the literature, they read the articles, they listen to the MP3s, they watch the videos, they listen to what we're saying, and it's like they just soak it up."

And soak it up they do. Most 14 and 15 year old kids are still in that impressionable stage. They are looking for someone and something to identify with. And many are looking for their own niche to belong to. Lavishing attention and free things upon them often assures the donor unconditional loyalty and respect.

The bands represent a variety of genres, but the must popular among the groups are the Black Metal and Thrash Metal groups. The lyrics run the gamut from love "ballads" to screams for violence. The instrumentation generally consists of guitars, bass and drums. The performers take the stage usually dressed in jeans, T-shirts and boots. However, many are so proud of their "ink" that the shirts are rapidly discarded and the audience is treated to sweaty and hairy armpits, and chests and arms adorned with iron crosses, swastikas, rahowa, etc.

One of the recent tactics of the hatecore bands has been to tone down the racial aspects of their lyrics in an effort to become more mainstream. This is being done not because of any "reformed mindset," but as a tactic to hook young people on the music and gradually introduce them to the racial messages that are a part of the agenda. In an interview with band member Dennis of H8Machine, he had this to say:

"You see there are plenty of bands that sing overtly racist lyrics and that will appeal to those in the scene. But it is like preaching to the choir. So we toned down the lyrics and tried to see where it will take us. I think when you attract people to the movement with shock value, as you would with over racial lyrics, those people will not last. They are only involved because it offends someone, they are not here for a true meaning of White Power."

Those in the movement are becoming slicker and more sophisticated in their approach to recruiting and proferring their hate rhetoric. As the National Alliance and others concentrate on changing their "image," it is only a matter of time before the same efforts reach those involved in the recording of Hatecore. While we don't anticipate much changing at a Hatecore concert, we do believe that we will be witnessing the groups and group members occasionally crossing over into the Hardcore world if for no other reason than to locate those who would be easily manipulated into the movement of hate. Let's take a look at some of the bands and their "music."
